Tracking device leads cops to stolen vehicle

Manila, Philippines – A stolen Mitsubishi Pajero equipped with a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) tracking device led police to a house in Quezon City, where yesterday realized not only the vehicle, with five other people who also might have been taken their rightful owners.
Arrested in pre-dawn raid carried out by members of the City Police Station 6 Quezon and the Anti-Carnapping Unit of San Marcos, Filinvest II in BATAS Hills were Gilbert Sable, a driver of Barangay Commonwealth; Leonardo Tablante and his wife, Christine.

The three se cree that are members of what police said was the group Tablante, the largest and most active car theft syndicate operating in Quezon City.

The police identified the alleged leader as the exchange of car dealers and bar owner Rico Tablante. Rico’s brother Leonardo, was able to escape arrest. Senior Supt. Magtanggol Gatdula, QCPD chief, told reporters that the group could be behind most incidents of car theft in the city.

Gatdula said his men encountered in the group’s alleged lair while they were in search of a missing black Mitsubishi Pajero registered APL 313. The vehicle is owned by Atoy Layne, who, according to the police, is the nephew of the Philippine National Police deputy director of operations, Chief Supt. Luisito Palmera.

Layne said that his Pajero was stolen around 9 pm Tuesday at the University of the Philippines campus in Diliman, Quezon City.

Unknown to the suspects, the vehicle was equipped with a GPS tracking device that alerts the owner if the car is being stolen. It also sends a signal that allows the owner to trace his whereabouts.

Police located the signal to the house in BATAS Hills about 1 hour yesterday and found a black Pajero inside the garage, but with another plate XHX-735.

The police, however, were able to start the car and revive the tracking device using the keys provided by Layne, proving that it was stolen the Pajero. Palmera later positively identified the vehicle in the QCPD headquarters at Camp Karingal, Quezon City as his.

They find along the Pajero with five vehicles: a maroon Chrysler truck, a Toyota Hi-Lux, a blue Volkswagen, a Mitsubishi truck and a Toyota Lite Ace. There was also a variety of tapas center, tires, spare parts, registration stickers, various gadgets, and several official receipts (OR), as well as certificates of registration (CR).

Gatdula said Tablante the group first came to his attention two years ago when they stopped a suspect car theft. Tablante Rico was allegedly bailed out the suspect.
